Growing up isn’t easy — even when your BFF is a wisecracking dog with his very own URL.
That’s the general gist of “Too Short,” the first episode of Dog With a Blog‘s second season. As the title implies, the story revolves around height-challenged Avery (G. Hannelius), who heads back to school only to find that she’s the only one who didn’t have a growth spurt over the summer. Thankfully, Avery’s well-intentioned mother Ellen (Beth Littleford) is there to make the kid feel better about her shortcomings.
Well, maybe not. “I run into the living room, find her sitting on the couch, and say, ‘Honey, I hear you’re having issues. With your body. Let’s talk. Why don’t you just point to a part of your body… and we’ll talk about it?'” Littleford tells EW, laughing. “Just Just incredibly awkward… And of course, she screams and runs away.” Watch that cringe-inducing moment below:
Clearly, Dog With a Blog is heading into slightly more angsty territory this year — which is one of the things Littleford likes most about the series.
“We’re setting the stage for the adult relationship” between Avery and Ellen, she says, adding that Dog occupies a unique space on the TV landscape: “There’s a void in family shows, shows that we can all watch together. There’s kid-coms, or there’s stuff that’s not appropriate for me to watch with my 8 year old. But this has — you know, we’re making Nixon references. We’re having emotional moments parents can relate to. So I really love that this show has something for everybody.”
Dog With a Blog returns on the Disney Channel tonight, Sept. 20, at 8:30 p.m. ET.
