Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched tonight’s Halloween episode of Pretty Little Liars, stop reading now!
Welcome back to Ravenswood, Liars! Last time we were here, we learned that Ezra Fitz wasn’t all he appeared to be, or rather, he was much more than he appeared to be. And now, we’ve got another big reveal… but we’ll get to that after we discuss costumes, creepy statues, Caleb’s departure, and more! Shall we?
In the PLL summer finale, the girls decided to stay in Ravenswood and attend the town’s big Halloween party, even after Mrs. Grunwald warned them not to. And after they found the perfect costumes, complete with corsets, 20-pound hats, and Victorian-era gloves, the core four headed to the cemetery, where the party was being thrown (obviously). On their way to the party, Aria got a call from a “worried” Ezra, who was secretly lurking around a tombstone dressed as a vintage soldier with some sort of gas mask contraption to hide his face. He told her “you need to be careful,” which either means he was putting up his good guy act or he genuinely cares about Aria. Theories?
Just outside of Ravenswood, Caleb was still on that 1957 bus, where he met Miranda, a young girl who was traveling to Ravenswood to meet her uncle after years of being in the foster care system. She and Caleb quickly bonded — they probably discussed the art of the perfect haircut — and he told her about his foster care background as well. He then informed her about his mission to find Hanna, and the two parted ways after exchanging numbers and a very awkward goodbye.
Back to the girls! At the party, the girls were quickly separated when they thought they recognized one man’s vintage soldier costume. When Aria went to chase down the man’s date, Mrs. Grunwald grabbed Emily and told her they all needed to leave. Sorry, Mrs. Grunwald, but if these girls listened to every creepy blue-eyed old lady they talked to, well, they wouldn’t be nearly as much to fun to hang out with.
The soldier was a dead end, but the Liars quickly reunited and had their first Red Coat sighting of the night. They chased Red Coat into a crypt, where they discovered a secret door that revealed stairs to a dark tunnel in which all the statues appeared to had been crying. Does this mean Ezra is the equivalent to the devil? Because I was really hoping he could redeem himself at some point in the future.
When the girls were caught in a wind tunnel, Hanna somehow got separated. How? Don’t ask me. At this point, I’m thinking “A” has to be magical. Away from the girls, Hanna was all alone with nothing but her boobs and her heavy hat when she discovered a message (written in blood?) that read “Help Me” on one of the walls. But she was quickly chased away by rodents. Still on her own, Hanna found another door that brought her to a mansion of some sort (what is this town?!). With Ezra hot on her trail, she found an old phone booth in the house, because Ravenswood couldn’t get any weirder.
By the time Hanna dialed a number, she was shut in the phone booth — who didn’t see that coming?! — and was surrounded by lights/flames that suddenly disappeared. She started to see Ali’s face outside the phone booth when the soldier (Ezra) came up and pulled Ali away. The door handle started to move, but luckily Caleb’s friend from the bus, Miranda, had wandered into the same mansion, which apparently belongs to her uncle. She found Hanna and let her out.
Trailing behind, the other three Liars finally found their way to the house. It wasn’t long until they noticed blood dripping from the ceiling. Sorry Emily, it was blood, not rusty water. Have you ever seen the show?!
They heard Ali’s voice saying “My friends know I’m here,” but when they went to follow her voice, they lost sight of Spencer. Seriously, WTF was going on?! Spencer wound up in an indoor garden of some sort, where she faced off with Ezra. I have to give a special shout-out to the way she picked up those hedge clippers and went after “A.” Finally, someone is starting the fight instead of running! And it worked… at first. Spencer cut Ezra’s right hand, and then knocked him down. But when she went to unmask him, he knocked her out instead.
Miranda, after having a flashback to her parent’s funeral in the mansion, reunited with Caleb and Hanna. Hanna tried to show Caleb the secret crypt door, but Miranda was distracted when she found her own grave. Okay, if that isn’t a sign to get out of town, I don’t know what is.
Still inside the house, Emily, Aria, and Spencer discovered that what they thought were Ali’s screams were really a recording that had been stolen from Mrs. Grunwald. She had recorded their session together back when Ali was scared for her life. Then, in a super eerie moment, Mrs. Grunwald could “feel” that one of the girls had been touched by the “one Alison fears the most.” As in Ezra? Because if that’s true, then Aria’s been touched by him a lot more than once. Let’s keep it real.
While Emily dealt with Spencer’s flat tire (it had been slashed), Hanna and Caleb said bye to Miranda, who discovered that a man on the bus with her and Caleb was actually dead? I’m officially confused. Hanna offered for Miranda to come back to Rosewood with them, but she needed to meet her uncle. And in a very sweet moment, Hanna kissed Caleb and thanked him for being the kind of guy she could ask to stay and take care of a pretty girl. He told her he loved her and then told Miranda he wasn’t leaving Ravenswood just yet. It’s a spinoff party!
But speaking of leaving Ravenswood, the girls thought they were stranded until Ezra conveniently showed up to drive them all home. However, as soon as he dropped them off, Red Coat made another appearance. Cue the thunder! The Liars chased her until she turned around and revealed that she…. was…. Alison freakin’ DiLaurentis! She’s alive!
Before she could say much other than “Did you miss me?” she told the girls that it still wasn’t safe for her in Rosewood and that she needed the girls to help her. Then she asked Hanna if she remembered what she told her in the hospital — so Hanna wasn’t seeing things! Then, just as a dark figure rounded the corner, Ali ran. Oh, hey Ezra! Aria apparently forgot her cell phone. How convenient and not at all suspicious! Surely Spencer is going to start wondering about Ezra now, right? The girl doesn’t let much slip by her, and the whole Toby of it all would still be fresh in her mind.
One last thing: Back in Ravenswood, Caleb discovered his own tombstone, picture and all. I’ll just leave that as your intro to read my Ravenswood react.
Back to PLL world: Someone remind me what Ali told Hanna in the hospital! And do you think the girls are going to start suspecting Ezra?! Was he acting different in this episode, or was I just noticing it for the first time? Will that hand injury come back to bite him? And what’s next now that Ali is alive? Are you happy she’s back?
