'Dora the Explorer,' other Nickelodeon shows leave Netflix, so what's left for kids to watch?

Say “adios” to Netflix, Dora. Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, along with several other Viacom series, is no longer on Netflix. The streaming service decided to not renew its broad contract with Viacom this month, so Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob Squarepants, and other popular Nick series recently ceased being available for instant viewing.

But this doesn’t mean Netflix has lost its babysitting abilities. There’s still a “Just for Kids” tab on the site that leads to plenty of streaming family-friendly shows, including Cartoon Network series like Powerpuff Girls and Adventure Time, PBS shows including Sesame Street and Arthur, and superhero fare, like The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Batman Beyond. Nickelodeon's 2013-2014 plan: More focus on those post-millenials (new 'Dora' spinoff and more) and keep the funny going

Nickelodeon may be getting older (it’s 33!), but its powers-that-be have a laser focus on the young market. At the network’s 2013 upfronts yesterday, Nickelodeon Group President Cyma Zarghami played up research that showed kids eight and younger have an intense connection to their sense of humor. And the Viacom-owned network intends to feed that need with new preschool programing and a slate of new animated and live-action shows.

“We have reorganized our development process in a way that allows us to make content smarter and faster than ever before, tailored specifically for this first generation of post-millennial kids,” Zarghami said. “Our research tells us that for them funny is a badge of honor, and because funny is in Nickelodeon’s core DNA, we believe our position will ensure our success with them.” READ FULL STORY

Dora the Explorer hits primetime on Jan. 14 with a 'Dora Rocks!' special

Dora’s going to get the party started in a half-hour special on Jan. 14 (7 pm ET/PT). In “Dora Rocks!”, Benny is having a sing-along party, but he forgot to send out the invitations. Dora and Boots must get the microphone to Benny’s Barn to call their friends to the party! They rush down the Noisy River, create a rocky avalanche to cross the Rumble Rocks, and arrive at Benny’s Barn to call everyone to the barn. Then a dolled up Dora sings a special song with all her friends.
