Hold your horses, 'My Little Pony' fans: We've got a new 'Equestria Girls' trailer -- EXCLUSIVE

My-Little-Pony-Equestria-Girls.jpg

Yes, the idea of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic‘s equine mane six being recast as human high school students sounds a little crazy at first.

But it’s tough not to be charmed by that premise after watching this brand-spankin’-new trailer, which clearly lays out the movie’s plot. Shortly after she’s named a princess, Twilight Sparkle’s all-important crown is stolen by wicked Sunset Shimmer, who spirits it through a looking glass. In order to get the tiara back, Twilight must follow her adversary into a new and strange world — one populated by weird-two-legged creatures who bear an odd resemblance to her pony pals back in Equestria.

There’s some rote stuff here, to be sure (“Looks like if I want my crown back, I’ll have to become princess of the fall formal!”) — but Friendship is Magic‘s quirky-cute sense of humor appears to be largely intact, which is really all that matters.

Start plotting your return trip to Equestria: EW can exclusively report that the fourth season of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic will premiere this winter.

There are sure to be more than a few surprises coming up for Twilight and friends. In the third-season finale, Twilight Sparkle gained her wings and became a princess. “What we didn’t want to do was change who she is as a character, because she’s certainly someone that everyone’s proud to know and love,” MLP head writer Meghan McCarthy previously told EW. “I don’t think becoming a princess really changes her; I think it’s going to introduce some new challenges for her.”

My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic airs on The Hub.

After weeks of waiting, the mane event is finally almost here. Tomorrow morning, Twilight Sparkle will finally earn her wings and become a princess in Friendship Is Magic‘s third season finale. (Well, technically the coronation won’t happen until later in the episode…but who’s counting?)

First, though, the unicorn will have to grapple with a curse that switches around all of her friends’ cutie marks — thus messing with their destinies. “Twilight uses her wits and her love of her friends and ingenuity to figure out what’s going on,” voice actress Tara Strong (who plays Twilight) explained in an interview this week. “It’s a very exciting episode. There’s a lot of twists and turns, and things that you think are going to go wrong, and wonderful music.”

Speaking of that music: “Magical Mystery Cure” features a full score and seven different musical numbers by composer/lyricist Daniel Ingram and lyricist M.A. Larson, who doubles as the episode’s screenwriter — all in about 21 minutes and 45 seconds of airtime. Here’s a sneak peek at the opening number, an “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” style tune about starting a day off in Ponyville:

Yes, My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic is designed primarily for children. But adults who watch the show will be delighted to discover a world of references engineered to go right over its target audience’s tiny heads — specifically, homages to grown-up touchstones like Star Wars, Top Gun, and even The Big Lebowski (pictured above).

Before the cult hit airs its season finale this Saturday, get acquainted with it by watching Friendship Is Magic‘s 10 best nods to entertainment classics, placed in the order in which they appeared on the show.

1. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

After saving the land of Equestria from the wicked spirit Discord in season 2′s “The Return of Harmony,” the six pony pals at the center of the series are lauded as heroes — much like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo at the end of the first Star Wars movie. See the pony version of this scene below — then watch the second video to see how perfectly it syncs up with A New Hope‘s conclusion.

Citius, Altius… Ponius?

That motto could probably use some work. In the meantime: The Equestria Games are afoot! (Ahoof?)

In this week’s episode of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, the Mane Six find themselves on a mission to help the once-cursed Crystal Empire win the honor of hosting a prestigious athletic competition. One of them is particularly determined to achieve this goal — as voice actress Ashleigh Ball explained to EW during our interview,  “Rainbow Dash, she’s especially nervous because when she was a filly, Cloudsdale had the opportunity to have the Games there — and it didn’t quite work out. So she’s really desperate to see the games happen in the Crystal Empire.” See how a tiny Rainbow Dash responded to the agony of defeat in this exclusive clip:

'My Little Pony': Ashleigh Ball, voice of Rainbow Dash and Applejack, speaks

Shortly after Canadian voice actress Ashleigh Ball joined the cast of The Hub’s fledgling series My Little Pony Friendship is Magic in 2010, her parents threw out a giant box of her old My Little Pony figurines. Though Ball had been a devoted Pony fan — “I think my favorite was Applejack, actually, because she had blonde hair like me,” she says — she didn’t try to save the toys from the trash.

Now, of course, she wishes she had acted differently. “I could auction them off on eBay or something,” Ball laughs. Chances are they’d have fetched a high price — against all odds, My Little Pony has become incredibly popular among both its young, female target demographic and the adult devotees who fill fan sites with Pony-centric stories, art, music, and even their own full-length MLP episodes. 'My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic': A Brony explains why fans say 'neigh' to Princess Twilight

Princess-obsessed children everywhere will be thrilled to learn that Twilight Sparkle — the purple unicorn at the center of The Hub’s My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic — is going to earn a pair of royal wings and a spiffy tiara in the cartoon’s upcoming season finale. But there’s one group that’s feeling less than excited at the prospect of Twilight becoming a princess: Bronies, the adolescent and adult fans of the show whose equine passion has become its very own subculture.

Shortly after EW broke the news of Twilight’s transformation this Tuesday, the fan community exploded into a flurry of commentary — most of it negative. “If this true they may have very well jumped the shark on this once awesome series. Such a shame,” one commenter wrote on our original post. Others were a little more vehement: “Hasbro what R U doing?!…Hasbro….STOP!!!”; “Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”; “Oh god..why??? WHY????” The backlash has been even worse on fan sites like Equestria Daily (where the original post about Twilight’s princessification has drawn over 2,500 comments) and Reddit’s pony-centric message board (where hundreds of fans have expressed fervent hopes that the royal metamorphosis isn’t permanent.)

So why, exactly, are bronies getting their bridles in a twist?  READ FULL STORY »

It’s reigning Twilight Sparkle!

EW can exclusively reveal that the third season finale of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic will see everyone’s favorite unicorn being named a princess — and gaining a new pair of regal wings in the process. “She was set up from the very beginning to be on an important journey,” explains MLP head writer Meghan McCarthy. “It’s really about her earning this new status by combining all the things that we’ve seen her learn over the course of the series.”
