Scoop on the 'Phineas and Ferb' tribute to 'Star Wars'; Plus, what would a 'Star Wars'/Marvel universe crossover look like?

Disney has started to cash in on the countless crossover opportunities presented by the studio’s 2012 purchase of LucasFilm. Last month, the House of Mouse announced that a one-hour TV special will feature characters from both Star Wars and Disney Channel series Phineas and Ferb. EW now has more details on the special that will air in 2014.

As previously announced, step-brothers Phineas and Ferb will appear as residents of Tatooine who are thrust into a galactic rebellion when the plans for blowing up the Death Star accidentally fall into their hands.

While promoting their upcoming crossover with the Marvel universe, Phineas and Ferb creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh told EW that the Star Wars tribute takes place during the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

'Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel': How Danville and the Marvel universe came together for the crossover TV special

Disney has quite the large collection of beloved properties under one roof, so it was only a matter of time before kids were treated to an animated team-up of favorite characters from different worlds. That’s the big appeal of the Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, the first animated crossover for Marvel and Disney, which airs this Friday on Disney Channel.

Phineas and Ferb creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh grew up as fans of Marvel superheroes (Marsh learned how to draw by tracing images of Iron Man), so the one-hour TV special was an exciting endeavor for the two of them. Povenmire recalled teachers telling him, “You can’t make a living drawing superheroes!” Turns out they were wrong about that.

Stan Lee gets another cameo in 'Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel' -- EXCLUSIVE CLIP

As a kid, Stan Lee wanted to be an actor. Fortunately for millions of superhero fans, he carved out a different career path and created iconic Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man. But Lee still has found his way onto both the big and small screen, though if you had told him at the beginning of his career that his work in the comic book industry would someday earn him dozens of cameo roles, he “wouldn’t have believed it, no way,” he told EW.

Just as he’s had his few seconds of screentime in movies like Spider-Man and The Avengers, Lee will appear in Disney Channel’s upcoming special, Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, which teams up Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Spider-Man with enterprising step-brothers Phineas and Ferb. He reprises his cameo role from 2000’s X-Men, a hot dog vendor.

Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel is the first animated crossover for Marvel and Disney, something Lee is very excited to see.

'Phineas and Ferb' planning hour-long 'Star Wars' tribute episode

May the synergistic force be with you!

When Disney purchased LucasFilm in 2012, all sorts of tantalizing crossovers immediately became possible — and now, the acquisition is finally starting to pay dividends for fans of Phineas and Ferb.

The Mouse announced today that the popular cartoon will premiere an “epic ode” to Star Wars on Disney Channel and Disney XD next year. The one-hour special “places the characters of Phineas and Ferb in the same space and time as the world of Star Wars,” though according to a synopsis, it doesn’t seem as though they’ll necessarily interact with any of the sci-fi franchise’s own characters.

Here’s a lengthy, official description of what creators and executive producers Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh have in store:
